The casino is a 10-minute taxi ride away, which means this is a cultural-first, casino-second proposition: perfect for couples where one person is a casino enthusiast and the other needs more convincing. I left feeling like I'd stayed somewhere genuinely historic."
The Hotel
The Schloss Leopoldskron was built in 1736 for Prince-Archbishop Leopold Anton Firmian. It became famous as the real-world inspiration for the Von Trapp family home in The Sound of Music — the exterior lake terrace scenes were filmed here. The hotel has 32 rooms and suites — deliberately small, which keeps the atmosphere intimate and private. Rooms are baroque and opulent without feeling overdone: original ceiling frescoes, antique furniture, modern bathrooms. The Grand Lakeside Suite has views over the private lake and the Festung Hohensalzburg fortress that are frankly unreasonable. Breakfast is served in the 18th-century Marble Hall — gilded, frescoed, overlooking the lake.
The Casino
Casino Salzburg is located in the Klessheim Palace on the outskirts of Salzburg — a 5km taxi ride from the hotel. The Klessheim Palace is a baroque summer residence built for the Archbishops of Salzburg. Walking into a casino housed in a baroque palace that has been in use since the 1680s is a particular kind of experience. Games: European Roulette, Blackjack, Baccarat, Poker, Slots. The casino is run by Casinos Austria AG — standardised, professional, well-maintained. Dress code is smart casual minimum, with jacket recommended on evenings.
