Britannia Hotel
Trondheim, Norway ยท 5-star
Anna's Weekend Verdict
"The Britannia is Trondheim's grande dame โ a 5-star Edwardian masterpiece with some of Norway's best restaurants under one roof. The gaming here is limited to Multix terminals rather than a full casino, but the hotel experience more than compensates. For a winter city break combining Arctic atmosphere, extraordinary food, and a flutter on the terminals, this is the address."
The Hotel
The Britannia Hotel reopened in 2019 after a painstaking four-year restoration that transformed Trondheim's most famous hotel into one of Scandinavia's finest. Originally built in 1870, the hotel retains its Edwardian grandeur โ the Palmehaven (Palm Court) with its stained-glass dome is reason enough to visit. The 257 rooms range from elegant doubles to spectacular suites, all with marble bathrooms, high ceilings, and the kind of attention to detail that justifies every krone. The hotel's food scene is remarkable: Speilsalen holds a Michelin star, Brasserie Britannia serves classic French cuisine, and Jonathan bar mixes cocktails in a setting that feels like a 1920s gentleman's club.
The Casino
Norway doesn't have licensed land-based casinos โ the country's gaming monopoly (Norsk Tipping) operates through Multix terminals placed in hotels and licensed venues. The Britannia has a selection of these terminals in a comfortable lounge setting near the bar. While this isn't a casino floor in the traditional sense, the terminals offer slot-style games and some electronic table games. For visitors expecting a full casino experience, manage expectations โ but for a relaxed evening session with a drink in hand, the Multix lounge at the Britannia is pleasant enough.
Best Weekend Activities Nearby
Nidaros Cathedral
Scandinavia's largest medieval cathedral, a 10-minute walk from the hotel. The Gothic architecture and crown jewels exhibition are extraordinary.
Bakklandet & Old Town Bridge
The colourful wooden wharves along the Nidelva river are Trondheim's most photographed spot. Excellent cafes and vintage shops.
Northern Lights (winter)
Trondheim is far enough north for aurora viewing from October to March. Hotel concierge can arrange guided trips to darker skies outside the city.
The Verdict
Best for: Foodies, architecture lovers, couples wanting a Scandinavian city break with a side of gaming
Anna's weekend tip: Book a table at Speilsalen for your first evening โ it's Trondheim's only Michelin star and the tasting menu is worth every krone.
